Stannard family papers, 1814-1912.

Correspondence, deeds, pension documents, and wills representing four generations of a Clinton and Westbrook, Connecticut, family. Joseph E. Stannard, son of Elbert and Dency Stannard, was a lieutenant in the United States Navy during the Civil War. His papers include a marriage certificate, correspondence, documents related to the settlement of the estate of Charles Chapman, and material related to his Navy pension. His wife, Ellen Bushnell Stannard, pursued the pension after Joseph's death in 1892. Their children Joseph E., Percy D., Walter M. and Horace E. Stannard, wrote frequently to their mother; their letters can be found in her correspondence. The largest number of letters belongs to Walter, who placed advertisements in newspapers across the country seeking young ladies with whom to correspond and perhaps develop a romantic relationship, and others seeking business investment opportunities. A significant portion of his incoming letters are replies to these advertisements that he placed in such periodicals as The Heart & Hand. Other family members represented in the collection are Lay Stannard and his son Elbert Stannard, Joseph's father.
